<image:title>Characters from the 1900s - Langston Hughes PORTRAYED BY KEITH HENLEY</image:title>
<image:caption>Langston Hughes was a poet who utilized the American language, music, slang and religious views to educate the world about African American lifestyles during the Harlem Renaissance. His jazz poetry depicted the "low-life", or the real life experiences of blacks in the lower social-economic strata. His criticisms focused on the divisions, and prejudices, based on skin color within the black community. Henley’s portrayal deals with the issue of how to be oneself, and encourages all to joy in the knowledge that “I too have a song to sing” and to ask the question “why not me?” Keith Henley: Bio Actor/Historian, Interpreter, Reenactor, Impersonator</image:caption>

<image:title>Characters from the 1900s - Harvey Girls - Go West! portrayed by kim hanley</image:title>
<image:caption>It is 1942 and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt has joined the Allied Powers in the second Great War. Troops are on the move across the country and the Train lines are the most efficient means to move them. But an army needs to be fed! Who better to do so than the company that literally pioneered rail-way food service, Fred Harvey. His famous waitresses, known as The Harvey Girls were the first nationally known female workforce. They were known for efficient, courteous service. During the depression of the 1930’s, many Harvey Houses across the southwest had been closed, but with the troop trains on the move, many houses have to re-open, and they need to be staffed. Many is the old Harvey Girl who came out of retirement to do her duty to her nation by feeding the troops. In this presentation, we will meet Mrs. Alice Dougherty White. Along with many young women in search of independence and adventure, Alice left her home back East in 1907 when she was a teenager, answering the call to work as a Harvey Girl along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. These young ladies and the Fred Harvey Company are credited with civilizing the Southwest. Mrs. White will recount her days as a Harvey Girl as she considers coming out of retirement to Serve the Troops. <image:title>1700's and Earlier - Martha Washington Portrayed by Carol Spacht</image:title>
<image:caption>Martha Washington's remarkable, and mostly untold, story helps audiences to understand the unique role women played in the building of our nation. Martha Washington was instrumental throughout the revolutionary war. Joining her husband at his winter encampments, she provided stockings and other necessaries to the soldiers at Valley Forge and elsewhere. Her most valuable contributions were, undoubtedly, those of her kind ministrations to the soldier’s morale. As a first lady, though she felt imprisoned by the role and longed always for the sweet country life at Mount Vernon, she never showed it, and was “determined to be cheerful despite [her] circumstances”, which on many occasions took a stalwart resolve. <image:title>1700's and Earlier - Annis Boudinot Stockton portrayed by Kim hanley</image:title>
<image:caption>The Poetry of Revolution: Annis Boudinot Stockton was a rare figure for her time, a Poet. Some of her works were published and her peers could read for themselves that women indeed possessed keen and educated views, both social and political, of the world on which they lived. As the wife of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Mrs. Stockton moved within the circles of the Revolutionary elite including George Washington. General Washington’s dealings among the halls of Men are well documented, but what of his respect from the distaff side of the population? Patriotism in the female sex was a much needed quantity if Independence was to succeed and General Washington counted several women as Great Patriots and Good Friends, among them was Mrs. Richard Stockton Mrs. Stockton’s letters and poetry remind the 21st century audience that women of her age were much more than meek servants to their husbands and family. They too were members of a greater community and they had opinions about which they were passionate and even Poetic. <image:caption>Born in Braintree Massachusetts, John Hancock, President of the 2nd and 3rd Continental Congresses was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. He was a protégé of Samuel Adams, and popular Bostonian, in part due to the support he garnered after his sloop, The Liberty, was seized by the British. Charges of smuggling were brought and then dropped, but the label of smuggler was never fully shaken. Hancock inherited his uncle’s booming merchant trade and became one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. He read law at Harvard, and used his wealth, skill, and popularity to great effect in support of the struggle for Independency. Post war, he used these qualities and the force of his new position as, first and third, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to achieve Massachusetts’s ratification of the Constitution Invite John Hancock to mercantile, legal, insurance and philanthropic organization events. <image:caption>Born in New York (1723) Livingston, a graduate of Yale, went into law, but after years in New York politics, he and his family moved to Elizabethtown where they built an estate (Liberty Hall). Returned to politics by the Revolutionary War, he was a member of the first and second Continental Congresses. In 1776, he left Congress to command the New Jersey militia, and later that year he was elected the first governor of our state. Livingston spurred New Jersey’s rapid ratification of the Constitution, conducted agricultural experiments, and was also active in the anti-slavery movement. <image:title>Characters from the 1800's - Thomas Edison Portrayed by Bob Gleason</image:title>
<image:caption>American inventor, scientist, and businessman Thomas Edison developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Edison was dubbed "The Wizard of Menlo Park." Less known is his brilliance as a business pioneer. By aligning multiple businesses to bring innovation to the marketplace, he laid the path for today's General Electric, the company that continues to ask the question: “Why predict the future when you can create it.” Edison’s inventions changed the world. His story is the American Dream. He began his first entrepreneurial venture selling vegetables to supplement his income. His knack for invention initially included making improvements to the telegraph, but his invention of the phonograph in 1877 was the beginning of a technology-based empire. His business acumen eventually led him to found 14 companies, including General Electric, which is still in existence and is one of the largest publicly traded companies in the world. He modestly once said that his inventions were “one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Bob Gleason completely engages the audience with his portrayal of Thomas Edison. In addition to learning about the inventor’s life, inspirations and inventions, a visit with Thomas Edison will make anyone believe that with a little imagination, ingenuity, and a lot of hard work, great things are possible. <image:title>Characters from the 1800's - Matthew Henson PORTRAYED BY KEITH HENLEY</image:title>
<image:caption>Receiving many honors posthumously, Matthew Henson was much overlooked throughout his entire career as an explorer. Though he traveled throughout the northern hemisphere and is acknowledged the first man to reach the North Pole, his accomplishments were overshadowed by his colleague, Commander Robert Perry. Henson faced and overcame many of the limitations and struggles inherent for African Americans at the time. Orphaned at a young age, Henson worked hard to earn his way from being employed as a dishwasher, to a position as a Cabin boy, and eventually, he became a skilled navigator, and explorer. Reflecting back he wrote two books about his experiences, “A Negro Explorer at the North Pole” and “Dark Companion”. The story of Matthew Henson’s fascinating life encourages one to believe in oneself despite the odds, and to rise above the limited expectations of others to reach any goal. <image:title>Characters from the 1800's - John Marshall Portrayed by Doug Thomas</image:title>
<image:caption>John James Marshall was an American politician who served as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 to 1835. Marshall remains the longest-serving chief justice in Supreme Court history, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential justices to ever sit on the Supreme Court. Doug Thomas’ natural intelligence and quick wit provide the perfect combination to bring John Marshall to the 21st century audience. A debate between John Marshall and Thomas Jefferson highlights the essential differences between the Founders: The sovereign rights of the States, the power of the Executive, and the independent authority of the Judiciary. Marshall v. Jefferson is popular for High School age audiences, General Audiences, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for Lawyers and Judges. <image:title>Characters from the 1800's - Francis Scott Key PORTRAYED BY DOUG THOMAS</image:title>
<image:caption>Maryland born Lawyer and author Francis Scott Key was engaged in negotiations regarding the release of American soldiers aboard the HMS Tonnant during the Battle of Baltimore. After dinner aboard the ship. Key was refused permission to leave in order to return to his own ship because it was believed that he had attained specific knowledge about the British fleet's position and strength. Thus being stranded, he was unable to do anything but watch, as the British began their assault on Fort McHenry in September of 1814. While returning to Baltimore, the images of the battle still fresh in his mind, he penned the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry" which later became adopted as our National Anthem in 1916. <image:title>Two Character Programs - My Dear Mrs. Lincoln</image:title>
<image:caption>My Dear Mrs. Lincoln is a glowing exploration into the life of American’s most provocative First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln, and her relationship with President Abraham Lincoln during the 1860s. This play moves beyond Mary’s traditional role as First Lady and confronts the audience with an intimate view of the First Couple’s trials and tribulations as they look back over the events of their tenure in the White House. Spend an evening with the Lincolns and feel the deep suffering in the hearts of both husband and wife, as they deal with Mary’s depression over the death of their two children, and observe the erratic way she copes. Appreciate Abe’s classic humor as he attempts to stem the tide of war and mitigate the constant strain on his family and his marriage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Two Character Programs - The Belle & the Backwoodsman</image:title>
<image:caption>THE STORY OF ABRAHAM & MARY TODD LINCOLN President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, invite you to share some humorous and touching stories about their early lives, their marriage and children, the years of political struggle, the Presidential years, and the War Between the States. Born into two very different Kentucky families and with two very different backgrounds, Abraham worked hard to rise above a childhood of poverty and lack of education in Hodgenville, while Mary Todd came into a world of wealth and privilege in Lexington. When they met, however, Mary recognized Abraham as the man who would bring to fruition her childhood dream of living in the White House. And Abraham saw in Mary a woman whose drive and energy might take him there as well. Abraham and Mary’s stories will touch, enchant and inform you as they reminisce about their lives. Please join them!</image:caption>
